Chapter Fifteen

Dilly marched down a corridor, surveying the oblong burrows at the bottom of the bulkheads. It turned and nodded to Swooch, who sauntered along at its side, carrying a lidded basket.

“Thank you for agreeing to help,” Dilly said.

“Hekk yeah, buddy. As soon as you asked if I wanted to grab some potatoes with you, my belly started rumbling.” Swooch flipped open her basket, revealing a selection of condiments. “I brought the sauce, boss.”

“It is afraid you have misunderstood request.”

Before Dilly could explain, a scream cut the air. A frenzied Gellicle man in loose-fitting clothes bounded past them. “Get out of here! They’re coming!”

“Who’s coming?” Swooch asked calmly.

The feline was long gone, but two Krubbs in yoga pants scuttled by on their stubby, insectile legs. “The brown blobs!” one shouted.

“Save yourself!” the other cried. “Run for your life!”

Swooch shrugged. “Yeah, okay.”

She turned to follow them, but Dilly caught her by the shoulder. “Do not go.” It peered down the hallway, toward the door the fleeing crew had come from. A holo-sign flickered and buzzed above it, reading Shockingly Serene Rejuvenation Electrospa. “Potatoes are in spa.”

“Sweet.” Swooch pulled a bib from her basket and tied it around her neck with a grin. “Let’s go get our nom-nom on, bro.”

She loped off to the entry with Dilly scuttling along behind. It ducked its head under the arch and scanned the room with its eight glowing eyes.

Warm, dim light shone down from oblong fixtures between the heavy beams of the ceiling, casting the spa in pools of shadow. Artfully distressed wooden planks covered the deck, and the walls were shrouded in purple curtains that gently rippled like a placid pond. There were several plush massage tables, each adorned with various chrome arms fitted with strange apparatuses, like oddly luxurious dentist’s chairs.

Dilly moved toward a segment of curtain that hung in tatters from its rod. It carefully pushed it away, revealing a collection of what looked like tater holes gnawed through the bulkhead. But they couldn’t be. The burrows were the size of dinner plates. Far too large to be made by the rogue potatoes. Unless…

The Dreda took a cautious step back. “Please turn lights to full intensity.”

Swooch pushed the slider on the wall near the door, but the lamps only sizzled a complaint before blasting out a sick shower of sparks. Dilly looked up to see large, blobby shapes scuttling across the broad ceiling beams. A low, flatulent growl drifted from above.

“There are many potatoes here,” Dilly announced calmly.

“Awesome. Let’s dig in!”

Dilly kept its eyes on the ceiling. By its count, there were seventeen oversized potatoes in the rafters. Eliminating them before they escaped would require stealth and speed. It crouched, unfurled its claws, and prepared to strike.

“And here we are,” a voice announced. “Our renowned relaxation electrospa!”

The captain marched into the darkened room and straight into Dilly’s armored behind. The attack on its rear flank startled the Dreda and it spun around, claws spread. Its mandibles parted over its long, dagger teeth as it let out a reflexive screech.
